I told my uncle what happened, and he was like "hmm that's weird. Maybe try buying the apple super drive and see if it works. My computer is not showing that it recognizes it anywhere. I had the exact same problem as 8. I turned the drive upside down with the Apple icon underneath instead of on top. Now the top is silver in color and without any graphics or markings. However, it puzzles me that even when it's working, there is nothing visible on the screen. And I can connect or disconnect the cable for the external DVD without getting any kind of prompt or error message.

How to play DVDs and CDs on a Mac that doesn’t have a built-in optical drive
First restart the Mac, if you have not done so recently. Insert a video DVD. It should now accept the DVD and mount it to the Desktop and not do anything else if the drive is working properly. If that is the case the disc is not ejected after spinning for a few seconds , you may have fixed the problem.

My drive accepts Apple discs, such the install discs and Logic Pro etc and even mounts blank discs, but spits out audio CDs, and various other application install disks.
If the disc appears warped or has a surface that isn't smooth and flat, this could be the cause the optical drive producing unusual sounds. Insert another disc into the drive to determine if a faulty disc is the cause of the strange noises. Eject the disc from the optical drive and restart the MacBook. If after restarting the MacBook the optical drive still produces unusual sounds, shut down the laptop. Use a can of compressed air to blow out the slot in the optical drive.
